74-Year-Old Lee Cooper Finds Fulfillment in Volunteering at Maine Needs
Lee Cooper, a 74-year-old from Kittery, Maine, has found a new volunteering niche at Maine Needs, a Portland-based nonprofit. The 74-year-old, who has a history of volunteering for conservation groups and Habitat for Humanity, now spends at least twice a week helping the organisation fill orders and assisting with various tasks.
Jo Albanese, who oversees volunteers at Maine Needs, describes Cooper as an easygoing and helpful volunteer who jumps in wherever needed. Cooper, however, does not meet the people he shops for, but feels a strong connection to them and their needs. He recalls an especially memorable order for a woman moving into a sober house, where he included a personal note and a minute-for-mom kit.
Cooper sees his volunteering at Maine Needs as a way to connect with people in need and bring himself back to the ground. Maine Needs collects donations of clothes, bedding, toiletries, cleaning supplies, and fills specific requests for clients. Cooper discovered this deeper connection to his community through his new volunteer gig at Maine Needs.
NPR is currently seeking stories and nominations for their Here to Help series on volunteerism in America. Lee Cooper's dedication and impact at Maine Needs make him a worthy candidate for such recognition. Despite the lack of information about Maine Needs' founding date and location city, Cooper's contributions highlight the organisation's positive impact on the Portland community.
