Abriendo Puertas: A Beacon of Hope for Domestic Violence Survivors in Delaware
Domestic violence is a pressing issue in Delaware, particularly affecting the Latino community in Sussex County. Language barriers, immigration fears, and limited transportation make it challenging for survivors to escape abusive situations. To address this urgent need, Abriendo Puertas was established in the early 2000s, offering safe shelters and bilingual support.
Abriendo Puertas began as an extension of the Peoples Place public service agency in 2009. This year alone, it has sheltered around 70 survivors and assisted many more in finding safety without needing shelter. The program provides a safe space to stay, along with additional services and assistance for those affected by domestic violence. It helps survivors find employment, offers financial education, and supports children through activities that promote healing and security.
Domestic violence is not confined to Sussex County; it affects families across Delaware. Last year, there were over 25,000 reported incidents, with approximately 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men being victims. For the Latino community, fear of calling the police due to immigration status and language barriers adds to the challenges of escaping abuse. Abriendo Puertas addresses these barriers by answering calls from men and connecting them with services, in addition to primarily serving women and children.
Abriendo Puertas, tailored to the unique needs of the Latino community, has been a beacon of support since the early 2000s. This year, it has sheltered roughly 70 survivors and helped many more find safety. By providing safe shelters, bilingual support, and comprehensive services, Abriendo Puertas continues to make a significant difference in the lives of domestic violence survivors in Sussex County.
