Authorities initiate an investigation into the drowning death of an athlete during a swim in the Volga River

In the heart of Nizhny Novgorod, a tragic incident has shaken the swimming community. The Investigative Committee of Russia for the Nizhny Novgorod region has initiated a probe into the death of athlete Dmitry Ionov during the XWATERS Volga swim event.

The investigation, which began following the incident on July 26, aims to determine the causes and circumstances surrounding Dmitry's death. The swimmer, a Moscow-based athlete who had been participating in XWATERS Volga swims for seven years, reportedly fell ill near the finish line.

As the swimmer signaled for help, he was being evacuated by boat when he suddenly lost consciousness. An emergency medical team immediately began resuscitation efforts, but unfortunately, they were unable to save Dmitry's life. Doctors continued their efforts at the regional clinical hospital, but it was too late.

The XWATERS Volga event, which saw over 3,000 swimmers participate, has been left in mourning. A final decision regarding the investigation will be made after the procedural check is completed. The results of this check will provide crucial insights into the unfortunate event.

Our thoughts are with Dmitry's family, friends, and the entire swimming community during this difficult time.
