Cold Season Fills Waiting Rooms in Berlin and Brandenburg - Berlin & Brandenburg See Respiratory Disease Surge Amidst Rising COVID-19 Cases
The start of the cold and flu season has led to a surge in patients with respiratory diseases in medical practices across Berlin and Brandenburg. COVID-19 cases are also on the rise, with doctors struggling to determine the exact number of COVID-19 patients due to reduced testing. Health officials urge residents to get booster shots and follow immune-boosting habits to combat the increase.
In the city of Frankfurt (Oder), medical practices have witnessed a significant rise in patients with respiratory diseases over the past five weeks. This trend mirrors the start of the cold and flu season, which has also led to an increase in patients visiting doctors' offices across Berlin and Brandenburg.
With COVID-19 cases also rising in the region, it's challenging for doctors to pinpoint the exact number of COVID-19 patients. Less frequent and systematic testing further complicates the situation. However, health experts recommend getting booster shots for COVID-19, flu, and RSV to protect vulnerable individuals, especially those over 60 and at higher risk.
To strengthen the immune system, regular handwashing, outdoor exercise, adequate sleep, and a healthy diet are advised. COVID-19 self-tests can also help prevent infections and avoid unnecessary antibiotic use for viral infections. Those experiencing symptoms of a respiratory infection should stay home for three to five days and avoid contact with others.
The flu vaccination season is underway in practices from October to mid-December. About one in six patients may present with flu-like symptoms, some more severe with fever. Many pharmacies in Berlin and Brandenburg offer vaccinations against COVID-19 and flu, making it convenient for residents to protect themselves and others.
