Introducing the Locker Room Bonus (LRB) in Malawi's Regional Women's Football League

By partnering with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), betting giant betPawa has introduced a revolutionary sports funding initiative called Locker Room Bonus (LRB) to the local league. This marks a groundbreaking move for women's football in Africa.

Away from the typical sponsorship deals, this program aims to empower every player and staff member stepping onto the pitch. It's all about supporting women, sports, and young Malawian girls who dare to dream beyond the sidelines.

In a unique twist, players and staff will receive instant win bonuses for 270 official league matches, totaling $157,000+ (MWK 273,240,000). These rewards will be directly invested in the game, with mobile money payments given on the spot, eliminating administrative delays and long waits. For each victory, teams receive MWK 1,012,000, with each player and staff member receiving MWK 44,000.

To celebrate the launch of LRB, a demonstration match was held in Lilongwe. After the final whistle, players—a mixed group of young talents, community leaders, and aspiring influencers—celebrated as their phones lit up with MWK 17,300 transfers, their instant win bonuses. It was more than just a game; it was a celebration of empowerment and a step towards a brighter future for women's football in Malawi.

The event was attended by media, political figures, representatives of the sports and development sectors, as well as an energetic group of invigorating opinion leaders, football enthusiasts, and influencers. These players transformed a simple penalty shootout into a time of sheer joy and purpose, encouraging each other with every kick.

According to Raquel Puig, Head of CSR & Sports Development at betPawa, "We talk a lot about empowering women in sports, but it's time to put our money where our mouth is. The partnership with FAM is a significant step in making this a reality. We're putting actual dollars into players' hands, rewarding performance, raising the bar, and showing that we believe in their abilities."

Following Malawi, other countries including Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda could witness the implementation of LRB in basketball and football.
