Björn Borg, legendary tennis player from Sweden, admits to past cocaine use in his memoir
In a candid and revealing interview on the Skavlan show on public broadcaster SVT, the 69-year-old former tennis legend Björn Borg shared his struggles with addiction and personal demons in his new memoir 'Heartbeats: a memoir'.
Borg, who dominated tennis by winning Wimbledon five times and the French Open six times, ended his career at the age of 26 in 1983. However, during this time, he was surrounded by bad influences and easy access to drugs and pills.
His first experience with cocaine was at the New York nightclub Studio 54 in the early 1980s. This was just the beginning of a long and difficult battle with addiction that would plague him for many years.
Borg's worst struggles with addiction occurred when he lived in Milan in the early 1990s, while he was married to Italian singer Loredana Berte. He collapsed on a bridge in the Netherlands in 1996, just before an exhibition tournament, and found himself in the hospital, where his father was standing next to him after he woke up.
In his memoir, Borg discusses these events and the shame and embarrassment he felt during his struggles. He also talks about his cancer diagnosis in September 2023 and the ongoing anxiety it has caused him about the possibility of the cancer returning. Borg has regular check-ups every six months to monitor the cancer.
Despite not playing tennis, Borg stated that he exercises every day. He also spoke about the controversy surrounding Jannik Sinner and his former fitness trainer Umberto Ferrara. Borg found it strange that Sinner rehired Ferrara after a suspension for an anabolic steroid positive test. However, he stated that he does not know more about the situation.
Borg's memoir, 'Heartbeats: a memoir', provides a raw and honest look into the life of one of tennis's greatest champions, offering a glimpse into the struggles and demons that many athletes face off the court.
