Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is currently under medical care in Brasilia, following a series of health complications and a recent sentencing by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) for attempted coup d'état.

On Tuesday afternoon, Bolsonaro's eldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, reported that the former president felt unwell, with severe hiccups, vomiting, and a drop in blood pressure. The hiccups led to a more severe episode that left him 'close to ten seconds without breathing.' As a result, Bolsonaro was hospitalized.

Bolsonaro's condition is currently stable but he does not look well. The former president has spent three weeks in the hospital recovering from a major abdominal surgery in April, which lasted over 12 hours to treat an intestinal blockage. On Sunday, he underwent a skin biopsy. After tests, Bolsonaro received medication through an IV.

The Supreme Court sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years in prison on Thursday for conspiring to stay in power despite his electoral defeat. Bolsonaro's defense has announced that it will appeal the decision. The court that will review the appeal is the full eleven-member plenary of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court. The initial trial was by a smaller chamber of this court.

Since August 4, Bolsonaro has been under house arrest due to suspicions of obstruction of justice. In July, he was forced to wear an electronic bracelet and his use of social networks was banned.

Bolsonaro's wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, has asked supporters to continue praying for him. His supporters are pushing for an amnesty for Bolsonaro and other Bolsonarista sympathizers convicted for attempted coup d'état. Prison guards were seen outside the hospital, but it is unclear if there are plans for Bolsonaro's imprisonment.

Bolsonaro, who has had numerous health issues in recent years and has undergone several surgeries due to the aftermath of a stabbing attack during a campaign rally in 2018, is spending the night under observation in the hospital. It is hoped that he will make a swift recovery and be able to face his legal challenges in the near future.
