BioCity Bremen Leads the Way in Sustainable Food Initiatives

Bremen, a city in northwest Germany, is making significant strides in promoting sustainable food production and healthier nutrition options. The city's efforts have been recognised on a European level, as it was recently awarded the "Best Organic City" title for its commitment to convert the municipal food supply to 100% organic by 2025.

Senator Moosdorf, Senator for the Environment, Climate, and Science, accepted the award on behalf of Bremen. She emphasised that BioCity Bremen works for the benefit of all city residents, with a focus on healthy eating from the start, environmentally and climate-friendly food production, and supporting local farmers.

BioCity Bremen serves as a key hub for research and development in sustainable nutrition. It fosters collaboration between academia, industry, and policy makers, supporting projects focusing on sustainable agriculture, food safety, and nutrition science. Partnerships with universities, local governments, and sustainability organisations have strengthened the ecosystem for sustainable food research and innovation. There have been efforts to increase public awareness and education around sustainable food choices through workshops, seminars, and community events.

The city actively promotes the development of ecological food value chains in the region. More than 30% of agricultural operations in Bremen are certified organic. Bremen has 20 small community projects that serve as models for sustainable development with limited resources. One such project is The Kitchen Forum, Bremen's center of competence for sustainable and healthy eating in communal catering, which opened half a year ago at the Bremen Adult Education Center.

The city's future plans include scaling innovation in areas such as alternative proteins, sustainable packaging, and circular food systems. The goal is to position Bremen as a model region by sharing best practices and collaborating on EU-wide sustainable food initiatives. Closer integration of the nutrition strategy with Bremen’s environmental and economic plans will foster a holistic approach.

The city's next goal is to develop a statewide nutrition strategy that will not only focus on public institutions in communal catering but will also support the transition to sustainable eating throughout society. The strategy will involve engaging multiple stakeholders such as public health experts, nutritionists, farmers, food producers, and consumer groups. Key targets include promoting local and sustainable food production, reducing food waste, enhancing nutritional quality in public institutions, and supporting innovation in food technology.

In conclusion, BioCity Bremen is making significant strides in sustainable food initiatives and is playing a central role in developing and implementing a statewide nutrition strategy that emphasises health, environmental sustainability, and innovation. Bremen promotes sustainable food systems through community projects and innovative agricultural initiatives, setting a positive example for other cities to follow.
