Urgent Crisis in Gaza: Cancer Clinic Closure Leaves Cancer Patients Desperate

The World Health Organization (WHO), along with other humanitarian organizations, is sounding the alarm over the closure of the European Hospital in the Gaza Strip, one of the last remaining facilities offering cancer treatment in the region.

According to the WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the hospital's closure has intensified the already strained healthcare system in the Gaza Strip. In an unfortunate incident during the evacuation process of the hospital's medical staff, an attack struck near the mission just before it was completed. Dr. Tedros called for the immediate protection of healthcare facilities amid ongoing conflict in the region, emphasizing they should never be militarized or attacked.

In a statement on their X service, medical charity Doctors Without Borders labeled the closure of the European Hospital as a tremendous blow to the shattered healthcare system of the Gaza Strip. Now, Nasser Hospital—the only operational clinic left in Khan Yunis—is the last hope for treating cancer patients. However, Nasser Hospital itself was targeted in an attack just hours before the closure of the European Hospital, marking the second attack on the hospital in less than two months.

Conflicts and hostilities in the Gaza Strip have escalated since Israel resumed its massive attacks on March 18 following a two-month ceasefire. To make matters worse, the Israeli security cabinet approved an expansion of the offensive and adopted a plan for the "conquest" of the Gaza Strip in early May 2025. Additionally, Israel has barred the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza since March 2, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis within the region.

Cancer patients in Gaza are now finding themselves in dire straits. The lack of critical medical services, including cancer treatment, neurosurgery, and cardiac care, leaves them with few options. The closure of the European Hospital has dealt a devastating blow to those in need, and the current situation is far from hopeful without immediate intervention.
