Cancer Institute Wilmot to Organize First Wilmot Warrior Weekend in the Fall Season
Wilmot Warrior Weekend Kicks Off in New York's Finger Lakes Region
The Wilmot Warrior Weekend, a highly anticipated charity event, is set to take place from September 29 to October 1 at UR Medicine's Wilmot Cancer Institute in the Finger Lakes region[4]. This three-day event aims to raise funds for lifesaving cancer research and patient care at the Wilmot Cancer Institute[1][4].
The weekend offers a variety of activities for participants, who are affectionately referred to as "warriors". The events include a cycling challenge for riders of varying skill levels, a 5K run/walk, and a 1-mile walk, catering to individuals seeking different levels of involvement[1][4].
Dr. Jonathan W. Friedberg, M.D., M.M.Sc., director of Wilmot Cancer Institute, expressed his excitement about the expanded weekend celebration[1]. He emphasised the importance of cancer research funding for advancing cancer care. Joining him in the cycling event is Dr. David Linehan, M.D., director of Clinical Operations at Wilmot and chair of the Department of Surgery at the medical center. Dr. Linehan is participating in honour of his pancreatic cancer patients[1].
The event encourages teams to think creatively, with suggestions to come up with clever names, create fun team T-shirts, and plan celebrations after their events[1]. Maddy Falletti, a Wilmot Warrior Weekend Ambassador, is involved due to personal experiences with cancer in her family[2].
The Wilmot Warrior Weekend aims to raise $5 million by 2025[3]. Early bird registration starts at $35 for the Wilmot Warrior Walk and 5K and $100 for the Wilmot Breakaway Ride[1]. Proceeds from the weekend support cancer research and the Judy DiMarzo Cancer Survivorship Program at Wilmot Cancer Institute[1].
The event is not only a fundraiser, but also a celebration of cancer survivorship[1]. Stories like that of Andy Palinski, a leukemia patient treated at Wilmot, reflect the personal drive of many participants who give back in appreciation of the care they received[1]. Volunteers are also integral to the weekend, helping to organise and run the event each year[2].
Sponsorship opportunities for the Wilmot Warrior Weekend are still available[1]. To learn more or register, visit WarriorWeekend.ourmedicalcenter.edu[1]. UR Medicine's Wilmot Cancer Institute is the Finger Lakes region's leader for cancer care and research[4].
