On Monday evening, the Hattingen Fire Department was called to a discount store in the town, following reports of a possible CO2 leak and smoke. Upon arrival, the market had already been evacuated.

The source of the CO2 leak was traced back to a technical defect in the cooling system's compressor, belonging to the company operating the affected store - Kaufland. One employee complained of health issues at the store, and as a precaution, they were treated by emergency services and taken to a hospital.

Firefighters confirmed elevated CO2 levels in the affected area using measuring devices. Extensive ventilation measures were immediately initiated to address the CO2 leak. The special response group for atomic, biological, and chemical incidents was not deployed, as the situation did not require it.

The staff of the discount store reacted exemplary by evacuating the market swiftly and effectively. After measurements showed the CO2 levels were safe, the storage area was inspected with a company technician. Upon completion of all measures, the scene was handed over to the operator of the discount store.

One employee was treated by emergency services and taken to a hospital as a precaution. Thankfully, there were no further reported injuries. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prompt action and proper safety measures in such situations.
