  4. Elvers: Elvers continue to grow and develop into juvenile eels within freshwater habitats.
  5. Juvenile and Adult Stage: Eels mature slowly over many years in freshwater habitats. The longfin eel, for instance, can live up to 90 years or more.
  6. Migration Back to Ocean: When mature, eels metamorphose into silver eels and migrate back to the ocean to spawn, completing their lifecycle.

Historically, the origins of eels were shrouded in mystery, leading to erroneous beliefs about their birth and reproduction. Contrary to earlier beliefs, leptocephali were discovered to be the larval stage of eels, although research on eel biology and migration patterns is still ongoing. Many aspects remain unclear, such as exact spawning locations and eels' full reproductive biology.

Nonetheless, researchers have made significant strides in understanding the complex life of eels, providing insights into their unique migratory patterns and developmental stages. Furthermore, work by scientists such as Gertrude Elizabeth Blood, who sought to improve eel fisheries by aiding elver migration, demonstrates the ongoing efforts to preserve eel populations.
