CBD in Equestrian World: Promising Benefits, Unclear Regulations

The use of CBD gummies in the equestrian world has sparked debate due to their potential benefits and unclear regulations. While studies suggest CBD can help manage pain and stress in both humans and animals, the science is still catching up to the excitement. Meanwhile, governing bodies like the USEF and FEI have implemented restrictions on CBD use in horses.

CBD, a compound derived from hemp, has shown promise in managing pain, inflammation, and stress. However, its use in horses is contentious. The USEF prohibits CBD gummies and their metabolites due to potential performance-enhancing effects. Starting September 1, 2019, horses testing positive for natural or synthetic cannabinoids under USEF rules will be in violation of GR4. The FEI also prohibits CBD oil and related products in active competition.

The USEF's regulation, published on May 14, 2019, clarifies these restrictions. It's crucial to note that CBD gummies are used at the consumer's risk, as their production is not regulated, and efficacy claims are not evaluated by the FDA.

In summary, while CBD gummies show potential benefits, their use in horses is restricted by major equestrian governing bodies due to performance-enhancing concerns. It's essential for horse owners and riders to stay informed about these regulations and proceed with caution when considering CBD gummies.
