Warning Issued Over Leaving Children and Pets in Hot Cars

Summer temperatures can quickly turn a vehicle into a danger zone for children and pets left unattended. According to recent studies, the interior of a car can exceed 45°C (113°F) within just 30 minutes on days with temperatures around 25°C (77°F). In extreme conditions, such as when the outside temperature is 100°F (38°C), the interior can reach 120°F (49°C) after ten minutes [1, 3].

This rapid heat buildup poses significant risks. Children, whose bodies heat up faster than adults, can quickly develop heat-related illnesses. Pets, too, can overheat rapidly, especially because panting is less effective in a hot, enclosed space [3]. The most severe risk is heat stroke, which can occur when a person or animal's body temperature rises too high.

On August 13th, a six-year-old boy was found alone in a parked car on Stadionstraße in Wissen at around 6:15 PM. The boy was heavily sweating due to the high outdoor temperature. A passerby rescued the boy from the vehicle, and the mother returned after approximately 45 minutes. An investigation is underway against the boy's mother for suspected bodily harm and endangerment of a child [2].

The ADAC strongly advises against leaving children or pets in a car, even for short periods. Opening a window provides little relief in a hot car. Prevention measures include always checking the vehicle before locking it, and considering using reminders like placing a purse or keys in the backseat [3].

Incidents like this demonstrate the underestimated danger of leaving children or pets in a car during hot weather. The ADAC warns that vehicles can become danger zones in summer temperatures. This is particularly life-threatening for children and pets, as their bodies are less able to regulate heat.

It is crucial to never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle during hot weather conditions to prevent such incidents. The youth welfare office has been informed about the incident in Wissen. Always ensure the safety of your loved ones by keeping them cool and safe during the summer months.
