Sparking Controversy: Regensburg's Top Doc, Abortion Opponent, and DGGG's Vice-President

In the heart of Germany, a stirring debate has arisen, questioning the coincidence of roles. The renowned gynecologist and obstetrician, Professor Dr. Angela Koenig, finds herself under fire, serving as a vocal opposer of abortions while holding a significant post within the country's leading gynecological society, the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGGG).

At a Federal Association for Life conference, Koenig, representing the St. Lukas doctors' association - an arm of the conservative religious Pius Brotherhood - voiced her opposition to abortions being considered part of Germany's healthcare services. A stance that contradicts the DGGG's declared stance on evidence-based, interdisciplinary counseling and care in matters of abortion.

A Clash of Beliefs and Professional Integrity

As the chief physician at St. Hedwig Clinic and the chair of gynecology and obstetrics at the University of Regensburg, Koenig is also active in the "pro-life" movement, organizing alongside Catholic abortion opponents. Criticism surfaces from Doctors for Choice, a group of doctors advocating unrestricted access to reproductive healthcare, including medical termination of pregnancies.

The group envisions Koenig's dedication to the pro-life cause as a conflict of interest and a betrayal of the DGGG's principles. They argue that her views undermine scientifically founded medical standards and the commitment to evidence-based medicine.

The Federal Association for Life – An Umbrella of Controversial Members

Angela Koenig has shared her views on "pro-life" issues in the past, speaking and offering expertise under the banner of the Federal Association for Life. Organizations like "Foundation Yes to Life" and the "Jurist Association for Life" fall under this entity.

The Jurist Association for Life, established in 1984, is known for its legal actions against institutions offering family and sexual counseling, as well as campaigns against informational resources. The association's past leadership has been linked to individuals with questionable histories, including anti-Semite and Nazi judge Willi Geiger and lawyer Wolfgang Philipp, who once criticized the Germans for losing valuable settlement areas.

Currently, Christian Hillgruber heads the association, a proponent of a legal obligation for women to carry and deliver their children. However, his stance on the Geneva Refugee Convention reveals an interesting discrepancy, often questioning the humanitarian rights of non-German individuals.

The Pius Brotherhood's Invisible Hand – A Matter of Questionable Allegiances

Angela Koenig recently appeared as a seminar leader at the "Life - Dignity" congress of the Federal Association for Life, an event that catapulted her into the orbit of the Association of Doctors St. Lukas, an entity affiliated with the Pius Brotherhood, a conservative religious association.

In the past, Franz Schmidberger, a known advocate for capital punishment, opposition to civil divorces, and theocracy, served as Koenig's deputy in the Pius Brotherhood. Koenig refuses to comment on Schmidberger's statements. Confronted with this association, Koenig claims to have stepped down from her position in the Association of Doctors St. Lukas in 2024 and contends that the association is currently dormant.

Yet, questions remain unanswered regarding Koenig's silence about her pro-life activities during a hearing in the German parliament regarding the repeal of the abortion advertising ban. Koenig refused to comment on these matters.

The Distorted Reality in Regensburg

In Regensburg, the Catholic hospitals of St. Josef and St. Hedwig and the University Hospital do not perform abortions. The gynecology department is absent. This leaves patients seeking abortions in a predicament, as the remaining medical practices are constantly confronted with prayer marches by Catholic pro-life advocates. During off-peak seasons, patients must travel to Nuremberg or Munich to access these services.

In light of these circumstances, Koenig's statements about a lack of complaints regarding inadequate or untimely abortion opportunities sound like a misrepresentation of reality in Regensburg.

The DGGG's Silence – A Missed Opportunity for Clarification

Doctors for Choice views Koenig's pro-life activism as one-sided and ideologically motivated, incompatible with her role as DGGG's Vice-President. The organization calls for Koenig to cease her pro-life activities during her term of office. Nevertheless, the DGGG remains silent on the matter, leaving many to wonder about its stance on the issue.

  1. Despite her stance against abortion being part of healthcare services, Professor Angela Koenig also champions the field of science, particularly in the domains of health-and-wellness, fitness-and-exercise, sexual-health, and mental-health within her role at the University of Regensburg.
  2. Moreover, Koenig's work extends to mens-health and womens-health, which encompasses a wide range of issues related to the physical and mental well-being of both men and women.
  3. A prolific figure in Regensburg's democratic framework, Koenig also engages in political discourse, often expressing her views on general-news and crime-and-justice matters.
  4. However, her involvement with the Federal Association for Life, an organization known for its controversial stance on certain issues, raises questions about her ability to maintain a balance between her professional roles and personal beliefs.
  5. This raises concerns about parenting as well, as many question whether a parent in Koenig's position can provide a balanced and informed perspective on these matters to their children.
  6. The lack of transparency and clarification from the German Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (DGGG) regarding Koenig's actions and association with the Federal Association for Life further complicates the issue, leaving the public in the dark about the society's true stance on the matter.
