The Hepatitis B vaccine is a crucial tool in the fight against this potentially life-threatening liver infection. Recommended for all newborns and children up to 18 years who have not completed the series, or whose vaccination status is unknown, the vaccine is also advised for adults at high risk of infection.

The vaccine's active ingredient is the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), a purified protein made using genetically engineered yeast cells. This key component stimulates the immune system to produce protective antibodies against the virus.

Other ingredients in the vaccine include aluminum salts (aluminum hydroxide and/or aluminum phosphate), which act as adjuvants, enhancing the body's immune response to the antigen. Formaldehyde, used during the manufacturing process to inactivate viruses and detoxify bacterial toxins, is present at very low, safe levels. Sodium borate (borax) helps maintain the vaccine's pH balance, ensuring stability and effectiveness over storage and use. Sodium chloride (table salt) makes the vaccine solution isotonic, minimizing irritation upon injection. Small amounts of yeast proteins remain in the vaccine, posing an allergy risk for individuals sensitive to yeast.

In addition to these, other components may include trace amounts of antibiotics, polysorbate 20 for stabilizing the formulation, and water for injections.

The hepatitis B vaccine is available in two forms: single antigen vaccines, which provide protection against hepatitis B only, and combination vaccines, which protect against multiple infections.

Common side effects of the vaccine include soreness, redness, or swelling at the injection site, fever, and headache, which usually last only a couple of days. In rare cases, a person may experience a severe reaction, with symptoms including hives, swelling of the face and throat, difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, dizziness, and weakness.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the vaccine can help provide protection against hepatitis B. If a person experiences symptoms after a hepatitis B vaccine, they should receive immediate medical treatment.

It's important to note that to receive full protection, a person must receive all the shots in the series, which may be either a series of two or three shots depending on the vaccine formula and their health requirements. HBV is transmissible through blood, semen, or other bodily fluids.
