Compression Stockings Show Promise in Managing Obesity-Related Venous Issues
A recent study published in the journal 'Phlebology' has shown promising results in managing obesity-related venous issues. The study, led by Prof. Dr. Markus Stücker, found that medical compression stockings significantly reduced symptoms in overweight and obese individuals. Obesity is a major risk factor for obesity-associated functional venous insufficiency (AA-FVI), with approximately 37 million adults in Germany affected. A study involving 49 patients with a BMI of 30 to 40 kg/m2, aged 54 on average, found that wearing medical compression stockings for four weeks reduced venous symptoms by 42.6 percent. The study chose compression socks due to their proven effectiveness in reducing venous complaints caused by obesity. The socks improve venous return, lower venous pressure, and alleviate swelling and related symptoms. Participants found the socks, both circular knit and flat knit, comfortable, easy to handle, and helpful. The study's results were published on July 11, 2025. The study demonstrates that medical compression stockings can be an effective and well-tolerated treatment for venous complaints in obese individuals. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and explore long-term effects.
