Construction progresses on Hospice Inpatient facility in Herford

In the heart of Herford, a transformation is underway at Unter den Linden 41, a building that once served as a day clinic of the district hospitals. The historic structure, a listed building, is being meticulously renovated and expanded to become the district's first stationary hospice near me.

The project, led by Byron-Leigh Brown, is progressing steadily. Deep construction work has been completed, and the cellar walls have been concreted. The roof work has been finished, and the windows have already been installed. The renovation of the exterior facade is running parallel with these efforts.

Inside, the old building has been gutted, making way for the installation of modern heating, plumbing, and electrical systems. An extension is being built, adding around 2,200 m² of gross floor area, ten guest rooms, a barrier-free elevator, and communal areas. The interior design will be bright, cosy, and homelike, aiming to avoid the hospital atmosphere often associated with such facilities.

The Diakonisches Werk in the Vlotho church district, the parent company, is overseeing the project. Kerstin Hensel, the managing director, has visited the construction site to monitor the progress. The organisation responsible for the care and operation of the inpatient hospice in Herford is Hospiz Herford gGmbH, a non-profit and joint subsidiary of the Diakonisches Werk and the Herford church district.

The operator of the hospice emphasises that it is not intended to be a competitive offer to outpatient hospice services and facilities. Instead, they aim for a close and trusting cooperation. Plans are in full swing at Herford Hospice gGmbH, including establishing cooperations for general practitioner and emergency care for guests. The head of house and the position of nursing director are already competently filled.

The funds for this project will be used for both the planned inpatient hospice and future outpatient services in the Herford district. The construction costs are being funded by the "Future in the Wittekind District" foundation, along with a subsidy from the Sparkasse Herford.

District Administrator Jürgen Müller, who is also the chairman of the board of trustees of the "Future in the Wittekind Circle" foundation, emphasises the importance of the hospice and palliative care idea, particularly in light of humanitarian concerns and demographic change. Donations are still needed for the hospice and can be made to the "Future in the Wittekind Circle" foundation or directly to the hospice at Sparkasse Herford.

With the completion of the project expected in summer 2026, the stationary hospice in Herford will offer comprehensive care, support, and accompaniment, a service that has not existed in the district before. It will provide a valuable addition to the healthcare services available in the region, offering comfort and care to those in need during their final days.
