Death Announcement: Robert Cook

In the heart of St. Louis, Missouri, on November 11, 1938, Robert Alan Cook, affectionately known as Bob, was born at Jewish Hospital. His life, which spanned 86 years, was a testament to the harmonious blend of faith and intellect.

Bob was a distinguished figure, primarily recognised for his broadcasting and ministry work. He was the voice behind the *Walk With the King* radio program, a ministry that delivered messages of faith and encouragement to people worldwide. The program, now rebroadcast to continue his legacy, aimed to help listeners deepen their spiritual lives[5].

Beyond his radio ministry, Dr. Cook was an influential Christian author and speaker known for his dedication to biblical teaching and outreach, aimed at helping people understand and apply God's word in their daily lives.

Bob's professional journey began at SLAC, now known as the SLAC National Accelerator Center, in 1973. He retired from SLAC in 2005 as a Computer Systems Specialist. During his tenure, he also volunteered at the annual regional US Department of Energy's Science Bowl for Middle and High School students, fostering an interest in STEM among the younger generation[1].

Bob's academic achievements were equally impressive. He earned his Bachelors of Arts in Mathematics from Oberlin College in 1960, followed by a Masters of Science in Mathematics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1961. In 1973, he completed his Doctor of Science in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from Washington University in St Louis, MO[2].

Bob's commitment to service extended beyond his professional and academic pursuits. He volunteered for 18 years supporting victims of domestic violence, serving as a guide who helped victims appearing in family court understand the legal system and the language of the court[3].

In the spirit of community service, Bob also volunteered at the annual regional Science Bowl, where teams compete to solve STEM problems. The regional winners go on to compete in the National Science Bowl (NSB) finals in Washington DC[4].

Bob's legacy continues to inspire, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to CORA - Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse - in San Mateo County, CA, in tribute to Robert (Bob) Cook[6].

Bob is survived by his brother Charles J Cook, sister-in-law Barbara Z Cook, first cousins once-removed Amy Biegelsen and Sara Biegelsen, nieces Sally Kiehnau and Wendy Cook, nephew Bill Cook, and niece-in-law Cindy Cook, in addition to several grand nieces and nephews[7].

Robert Alan Cook, also known as Bob, Uncle Bob, UB, or Yoo-Bee, passed away on June 27, 2025. His life, marked by faith, intellect, and service, will continue to inspire and impact those who knew him and those who were touched by his radio ministry.

  1. Dr. Cook's life, despite its focus on faith and broadcasting, also showcased a passion for science, as he earned degrees in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics and Computer Science, and worked at the SLAC National Accelerator Center.
  2. In addition to his health-and-wellness ministry through the radio program, Bob also found a unique way to affect the lives of younger generations by promoting STEM education at the annual regional US Department of Energy's Science Bowl.
