Designated Release Sanctuary
In the heart of Detmold, a novel initiative is taking shape to make the city centre more inclusive and user-friendly for all residents and visitors, particularly the elderly and mobility-impaired. This project, known as "Hopp' ma'-Zone", was unveiled by Mayor Frank Hilker on September 9, 2025.
The "Hopp' ma'-Zone" is a brainchild of the city portal, designed to facilitate a relaxed visit to Detmold's old town. Two existing loading zones at the corner of Exterstraße/Krumme Straße/Lange Straße and Schülerstraße opposite the Martin-Luther-Kirche will be prepared for the "Hopp' ma'" requirements. These zones will serve as designated areas where vehicles can stop to assist elderly or mobility-impaired individuals.
Each "Hopp' ma'" stop will feature a bench with two seats and ample space for a rollator/wheelchair. The first bench at a "Hopp' ma'" stop was crafted by the Stöltinghof workshop of Lebenshilfe Detmold.
The city administration, GILDE Economic Development, and the "die Haendler" business association are collaborating on the project "In Future Detmold". This collaboration aims to improve accessibility in Detmold's old town, with the "Hopp' ma'-Zone" being a significant part of these efforts.
The "Hopp' ma'-Zone" project will also provide shops in the city centre that are not barrier-free with ramps for rent, making it easier for wheelchairs, rollators, or strollers to enter the stores.
The quality of stay is a key factor in the attractiveness of Detmold's city centre, and the "Hopp' ma'-Zone" is intended to contribute positively to this by providing a more accessible and comfortable environment for all. The project also includes an inner-city map showing public and accessible toilets, air-conditioned and consumption-free resting places, stops, and barrier-free shops.
The "Hopp' ma'" project was developed by Dietmar Hopp and the Dietmar Hopp Foundation, with the goal of providing positive life feeling, activity, and participation opportunities for seniors and mobility-impaired individuals. This novel approach to addressing the needs of elderly and mobility-impaired individuals in urban environments is set to make Detmold's city centre a more welcoming and inclusive place for all.
