"Discussion about Jennifer Jones Austin's efforts to combat poverty and its effects specifically on racial minority communities"
In the heart of New York City, the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies (FPWA) continues its mission to combat poverty and promote economic security. Jennifer Jones Austin, the Executive Director of FPWA, will be delivering a keynote speech at City & State's "Economic & Workforce Development Summit".
FPWA, formerly known as the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, is an anti-poverty organisation that has a historical focus on the disproportionate impact of poverty on communities of colour. The organisation's work aims to help lift New Yorkers out of poverty and support not only vulnerable individuals and families but also the agencies serving them.
Currently, FPWA is focusing on economic security as the goal for prosperity in New York City. To achieve this, they are analysing the costs of getting ahead and staying ahead in the city to inform policies related to workforce, housing, and childcare. The city is doing well in ensuring childcare for families with young children and on affordable housing, but more needs to be done to ensure universal, meaningful childcare that doesn't exacerbate the problem and housing for low- and middle-income New Yorkers that helps people save and thrive.
In addition to these efforts, FPWA promotes policies focused on labour market flexibilization, digital transformation support, and measures to stimulate economic growth and innovation. The organisation's work aims to move from subsistence living to economic security for individuals and families in New York City.
To increase employment and reduce poverty, nonprofits, government, and the business community should strive to do good while avoiding causing additional harm. They should aim to develop solutions that drive toward economic security and dignity. This approach is crucial in addressing the biggest challenge for New Yorkers trying to lift themselves out of poverty—the focus on basic needs and subsistence, which doesn't help in weathering economic storms or planning for the future.
FPWA's mission extends beyond just advocating for policies. They also work to support New Yorkers living in poverty, addressing issues such as wage inequality, pay equity, accurate poverty measures, and unjust systems.
Jennifer Jones Austin's keynote speech at the "Economic & Workforce Development Summit" is expected to shed light on FPWA's ongoing work and provide insights into the organisation's vision for a more prosperous New York City.
