For over four decades, the Nummer gegen Kummer (Number against Worries) and the Kinder- und Jugendtelefon (Children and Youth Telephone) of the Düsseldorf Children's Protection Association have been providing a lifeline for children and young people facing various challenges.

Originally established in 1980 as a grades telephone, the Nummer gegen Kummer was not just a helpline for academic worries from the start. Over time, it has evolved to cater to a broader spectrum of concerns faced by young people. The service, which is available anonymously, confidentially, and free of charge, has expanded its scope to encompass a wide range of issues that burden today's youth.

The Children and Youth Telephone (C&YT), on the other hand, was initiated in 1992. It offers telephone, online, and email advice to children and young people, providing them with a safe space to express themselves and develop a strategy to tackle their problems. The C&YT also extends its support to parents who are struggling to help their children during difficult phases.

Bernhard Müller-Hildebrand, the coordinator of the C&YT, oversees the operations of these essential services. He notes that the adjustment of the Nummer gegen Kummer concept reflects the diverse issues affecting young people. Parents can discuss with their children the possibility of seeking advice earlier in the next school year to reduce performance pressure, fear of failure, or conflicts.

A conversation with the C&YT can be unburdening and encouraging for children and young people. It provides them with the opportunity to voice their concerns and find solutions to their problems. The services of the C&YT are available throughout the year, ensuring that help is always within reach.

As we commemorate the 45th anniversary of the Nummer gegen Kummer and the 30th anniversary of the C&YT, it is clear that these services have made a significant impact on the lives of countless children and young people in Düsseldorf. They continue to provide a vital service, helping young people navigate the challenges of growing up and offering support to parents who are struggling to help their children.

Science and health-and-wellness, including mental health, are integral aspects of the services provided by the Nummer gegen Kummer and the Children and Youth Telephone (C&YT). Given the increased focus on academic performance and personal issues among young people, these organizations offer confidential and anonymous counseling, helping children develop strategies to handle their challenges and improve their mental well-being.
