Truck Driver Sent to Psychiatric Facility After Chaotic Drive
A Polish truck driver, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, has been permanently accommodated in a psychiatric facility following a chaotic drive that left at least 23 people injured and over 50 cars damaged. The incident occurred on the A1 and A46 highways, from Jüchen in the Rhineland to Hagen in Westphalia, in late November 2024.
The judge ruled that the defendant, a 31-year-old man, is not guilty due to his serious illness. Eyewitness Andreas Röhling from Cologne testified on the last day of the trial, describing the chaos that ensued as the truck driver ignored repeated requests to stop and reached speeds of up to 120 km/h.
The defendant, who also consumed alcohol and cannabis during the incident, has already accepted the verdict. In addition to his accommodation in a psychiatric facility, his driving license will be revoked in Germany.
