Duo of hikers retrieved in grave condition due to extreme dehydration

In a dramatic turn of events, a group of young hikers found themselves in distress on the yellow trail in the Racó del Bou area of Montgó Natural Park. The emergency call was received at 2:22pm on August 16, initiating a rescue operation that would last until 4.59pm.

The Mountain Rescue Group (GER) was quick to respond, deploying a team to the steep and challenging terrain. The hikers, both in their early 20s, were suffering from severe dehydration and dizziness. One of them was in a more critical condition than the other.

A rescuer and a doctor were lowered to provide urgent medical assistance to the hikers. Once stabilised, the hikers were evacuated by rescue helicopter Alpha 01 and transported to the Denia Fire Station. A Basic Life Support (SVB) unit was waiting at the station to continue medical care.

Thankfully, both hikers are now out of danger, marking a successful end to the operation.

Authorities have emphasised the importance of taking precautions when hiking, especially during the hottest summer months. To prevent dehydration and dizziness, hikers should:

  • Avoid hiking during peak sun hours, especially between 12 pm and 4 pm.
  • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after hiking.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing that covers skin and use sun protection such as hats, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
  • Eat light meals.
  • Be vigilant about early signs of heat exhaustion or dehydration and be ready to stop or seek shade immediately.
  • Avoid alcohol and heavy physical exertion during heatwaves.
  • Inform someone about your hiking plans and carry a means to call emergency services (112) if needed.

These recommendations align with regional health and safety advice during intense heat waves affecting the Costa Blanca, including nearby natural parks, where temperatures often exceed 40ºC in summer and there can be wildfire risks that sometimes lead to temporary bans on hiking in forested areas. The Montgó Natural Park trails and surroundings are scenic but exposed, so precautions against heat-related illnesses are critical.
