Easter Activities Involving Science Experiments for Children

Easter is just around the corner, and Peeps are everywhere! This year, why not make science a sweet part of the celebration? A group of authors decided to do just that, by conducting some fun and educational science experiments with everyone's favourite marshmallow treats.

The experiments they planned were candy-focused, specifically designed for kids, and perfect for an Easter science fair. The Peeps Easter science activities included adding water, heat, and coldness to the beloved marshmallow candies. But if Peeps aren't your family's favourite, don't worry! We've gathered a list of candy-based science experiments that are sure to delight any child.

Grow Sugar Crystals (Rock Candy) Kids can dissolve sugar in water and grow edible sugar crystals on a stick over several days, demonstrating crystal formation and supersaturation.

Candy DNA Model Build a DNA double helix model using different colored candies to represent bases, linking structure to genetics concepts.

Build a Candy House or Tower Use sugar cubes or candies to construct towers or houses and test their stability with different conditions like spraying water. This activity explores engineering, material properties, and structural strength.

Fizzing Lemonade (or Candy Reactions) Combine candies with baking soda and vinegar or other liquids to observe fizzing and gas formation, learning about chemical reactions and acids and bases.

Make Edible Geodes Create rock-like crystal structures inside candy shells, similar to natural geodes, to learn about mineralogy and crystal formation.

In addition to these experiments, there are other fun candy-related activities that engage kids in scientific thinking, such as Ice Cream in a Bag, Maple Syrup Snow Candy, and Invisible Ink with Lemon Juice.

To make the Peeps experiments more engaging, a Peeps Experiment Sheet was created for the kids to make predictions, record observations, and draw conclusions. Each child was given a cup of water to predict what would happen when a Peep was put in it. After conducting the experiments, the kids discussed their observations and wrote their conclusions on the Peeps Experiment Sheet.

  1. The science of cooking can be as enjoyable as the final dish, with recipes serving as perfect platforms for exploring various chemical reactions.
  2. Aside from science experiments, Peeps can be used to demonstrate health-and-wellness concepts such as how eating a balanced diet contributes to overall fitness-and-exercise.
  3. For a more lifestyle-oriented approach, one could experiment with various food-and-drink recipes that serve specific health purposes, such as energy boosting smoothies.
  4. As Easter celebrations continue, enrich your lifestyle with these engaging candy-based science activities, merging health-and-wellness, fitness-and-exercise, and cooking in a fun, edible way.
