Studies have shown that green tea contains potent components that strengthen the eyes and aid in the prevention of cataracts and glaucoma. The protective compound responsible for these benefits is epigallocatechin gallate (ECGC), a vital component of catechins.

In a 2001 study published in the journal Experimental Eye Research, the catechins in green tea were discovered to prevent cataract-induced blindness. Similarly, a 2002 study from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences found that green tea leaf extract protected rats' eyes from forming cataracts.

Further studies, including a 2007 study that added green tea antioxidants to human retinal pigment epithelial cells, showed an increase in cell count and activity. Lastly, two studies in 2010 demonstrated the antioxidants in green tea to alleviate the oxidative stress leading to glaucoma.
