Fredericton Advances Community Safety Measures

Fredericton, New Brunswick - The City of Fredericton has made substantial progress in implementing the recommendations of its Community Safety Task Force, with 12 of the 16 city-responsible recommendations either completed or underway as of August 2025.

The task force, which had 18 representatives from various sectors, focused on addressing pressing social challenges related to justice, policing, mental health, addictions, and homelessness. The group's 47 immediate and long-term recommendations aim to improve community safety.

Immediate actions completed include creating an oversight team, securing federal funding for security infrastructure, and launching a 24/7 mobile outreach unit for vulnerable residents. Ongoing efforts involve improving lighting on trails, streets, and transit stops, installing public safety cameras, increasing policing in business districts, and enhancing neighbourhood watch programs.

Additional planned actions include developing a public safety camera strategy using residential and business surveillance footage, supporting Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design programs, leveraging police resources for high-traffic area patrols, establishing a petty crime unit, and researching strategies to manage prolific offenders.

Councillor Eric Megarity, chair of the city's standing committee on public safety, stated that the city is committed to building a safe, supportive, and heard community. He emphasized that progress is ahead of schedule and that these measures are essential for residents to feel safe and supported.

Investments in policing, improved trail lighting, public safety cameras, and other initiatives are part of the city's response to residents' concerns. The city is also working with community partners, including Horizon Health and the provincial government, to address the root causes of harm caused by homelessness, mental health, and substance abuse disorders.

Updates on the progress of the Community Safety Task Force recommendations will be available on a quarterly basis, with the next update expected in October. In addition, mobile outreach services for vulnerable residents will also be provided.
