Soaring Med Care Centers in Saxony-Anhalt: A Shift Towards Privatization?
Expansion of Healthcare Facilities Underway in Saxony-Anhalt - Expansion of Health Facilities in Saxony-Anhalt Continues
The landscape of Medical Care Centers (MVZ) in Saxony-Anhalt appears to be undergoing a considerable transformation. From 74 facilities back in 2019, the count has skyrocketed to 111 by the end of 2024, as per data released by the state government in response to a parliamentary query by Nicole Anger (Left). This growth has unfolded primarily in urban hubs like Halle (23), Magdeburg (19), the Harz district (12), and the Burgenlandkreis (11).
However, health policy spokeswoman Anger voiced concerns about the surge in private MVZ ownership. The rising tide of profit-driven providers, she argues, risks prioritizing financial gain over medical needs.
Critics contend that the focus on profitable specialties, such as surgery, orthopedics, radiology, and dentistry, neglects the essential primary healthcare services. This trend elevates economic interests over the wellbeing of citizens.
Left Decries 'Critical' Altmark Situation
Anger passionately underscores the precarious situation in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, where both MVZs and robust hospital infrastructure are conspicuously absent. According to her, the inadequate medical services in the north of the state have long gone unaddressed. The state must respond promptly to fill these voids.
The Left demands aid for community-centric MVZs. Yet, at present, there is no communal MVZ in Saxony-Anhalt, as confirmed by the government's response to the inquiry. No funds are earmarked in the state budget to support or foster communal MVZs.
Distinctive Characteristics of MVZs
It's crucial to note that Medical Care Centers are characterized by a separation between ownership and medical treatment. Doctors are frequently contracted as employees, according to the Federal Ministry of Health. MVZs can function as interdisciplinary or specialty-specific facilities.
Amidst rising concerns about the shift towards private MVZs and the eradication of communal MVZs, potential solutions like innovative care models, rural doctor quotas, economic support, and digital health solutions may pave the way for a comprehensive, sustainable healthcare system in Saxony-Anhalt.
