Health Minister Nina Warken is pushing for a substantial financial injection from the federal government, warning of a "dramatic situation" facing health insurance companies. In her mission to prevent a steep rise in health insurance contributions, Warken wishes to present a comprehensive emergency package.

"We must strive to minimize contribution hikes as much as possible," said Warken, speaking to Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND). The health industry is facing significant financial challenges, with funds draining at an alarming rate. Although the Commission for Sustainable Financing of Health Insurance must be established promptly, per the coalition agreement, Warken is determined not to wait two years for solutions.

Enhancing benefits for job seekers' allowance recipients is a key component of the proposed package. Warken criticizes the current federal government contributions for falling short when it comes to covering job seekers' health expenses. Health insurance companies estimate that the government would need to allocate an additional 10 billion euros to adequately meet these costs.

Furthermore, Warken demands the federal government honor its 5 billion euro debt owed to the long-term care insurance for pandemic-related expenses. With long-term care insurance on the brink of financial collapse, Warken believes no taboos should be off-limits when it comes to stabilizing its finances in the short term.

Experts project a hefty deficit of up to 5.8 billion euros in long-term care insurance for this year alone. The demands for a billion more in federal funding to stabilize long-term care insurance and the 10 billion needed for health insurance of unemployment benefit recipients were floated during coalition negotiations, only to be excluded in the final draft.

Warken's calls for action signal a challenging road ahead as she seeks to reform both Statutory Health Insurance (SHI) and long-term care insurance, balancing the need for financial sustainability with the accessibility of healthcare benefits for all citizens. As the newly appointed Minister of Health, Warken brings a fresh perspective and is backed by experienced health policy experts, offering hope for potential reforms and lasting solutions.
