Fire department in Bochum issues reports concerning blue light incidents

In an unexpected turn of events, the Bochum fire department was called upon to handle a hazardous materials incident late last night. At approximately 21:40, a resident reported a foul-smelling liquid on the sidewalk of Gudrunstraße, near St. Josef-Hospital, to the Bochum fire department.

The operation, which lasted approximately 4 hours, involved personnel from the Querenburg, Brandwacht, Langendreer, Nord units, as well as the special unit for information and communication from the volunteer fire department. The ABC team of the volunteer fire department was also involved in the operation.

Upon arrival, firefighters, wearing light chemical protective suits and respiratory protection, discovered a yellow, steaming liquid on both sidewalks. After consultation with the fire department's hazardous materials specialist, the acid was diluted with water and disposed of via the sewer system.

The incident took place in the city centre, as well as from main fire stations. The Gudrunstraße between Stadionring and the roundabout was fully closed due to the incident. Towards the end of the operation, two small containers of salt acid were found near the incident site. The amounts of acid were relatively small.

No injuries were reported during the operation. In addition to the firefighters, four passersby required cleaning of their shoes due to contact with the acid. The police are now investigating who spilled the containers of salt acid.
