Forensic nurse guarantees collection of evidence in case of assault against a female individual.
Nurse Malaika Vetter, a 34-year-old specialist in care and forensics, works in an office in the basement of the Institute of Forensic Medicine, located within Irchel Park in Zurich.
The Institute of Forensic Medicine, contrary to popular belief, is not a location associated with gardening or raised bed planting. Instead, its corridors and rooms echo with the sombre reality of its purpose. The flies that hover around are not a sign of a greenhouse but are associated with corpses, a frequent sight due to the nature of the work carried out within.
Malaika Vetter is no stranger to these flies, as her work often requires her to document cases such as the recent sexual assault. During the documentation process, she spoke to an observer, emphasising the importance of her work.
One of the victims she recently documented had fist-sized bruises on the upper arms and below the throat, typical of brutal grabbing and pressing down. However, Malaika Vetter highlighted that many victims of sexual crimes do not show any physical injuries, a stark reminder of the insidious nature of such crimes.
Despite the challenging environment, Malaika Vetter's workplace remains her office, a sanctuary amidst the hustle and bustle of the Institute. Her dark and curly hair is a stark contrast to the sterile white surroundings, a testament to her compassionate presence in a place that is anything but peaceful.
