France's Youth Spend 4+ Hours Daily on Screens; Adults Lag in Physical Activity

Adolescents in France are spending a significant amount of time on leisure screens, averaging 4 hours and 11 minutes per day. Meanwhile, global statistics highlight inequalities in physical activity levels, with urban professionals leading more active lifestyles than their less affluent peers and inactive seniors.

The average French person now takes around 6,500 steps a day, a notable increase of 800 steps in the past five years. However, only 30% of the French population meets the World Health Organization's recommended daily step count of 7,000. This suggests that while there's progress, there's still much room for improvement.

Alarmingly, more than 65% of French people spend over seven hours sitting each day. This sedentary lifestyle can lead to various health issues. To tackle this, experts suggest strengthening public policies for active mobilities, designing walkable urban spaces, and promoting a cultural shift that values walking as a viable and enjoyable mode of transport and recreation.

Addressing the sedentary lifestyle epidemic in France requires a multi-faceted approach. While progress has been made in increasing daily step counts, more needs to be done to encourage physical activity among all segments of the population. By fostering active mobilities and walkable spaces, France can help its citizens lead healthier, more active lives.
