Germany's UBA Launches Heat Stress Campaign for Cities

The German Environment Agency (UBA) has launched a comprehensive campaign to combat heat stress in cities and municipalities. The 'Heat Guide' brochure, customizable with local logos and information, is at the heart of this initiative. It provides vital information on heat risks and protective measures, with the UBA's Competence Center for Climate Impacts and Adaptation offering assistance in personalizing the guide (contact: [email protected]).

The campaign also includes a participation programme called 'Shade Givers', encouraging private individuals to download and share the Heat Guide with vulnerable groups. To support municipalities, the UBA provides a campaign guide offering insights into network building, media engagement, and best practice examples. Additionally, the guide includes practical materials like posters and stickers to raise awareness and promote protective actions.

With climate change leading to more heat days each year, the UBA's campaign aims to empower cities and municipalities to become 'shade givers'. Several municipalities have already individualized the Heat Guide with local information and logos, demonstrating the campaign's success and relevance.

The UBA's 'Heat Guide' campaign, with its customizable brochure and comprehensive participation programme, is a vital tool for municipalities to raise awareness about heat risks and protect vulnerable groups. As climate change continues, this initiative is expected to grow in importance, with more cities and municipalities adopting the guide and becoming 'shade givers'.
