Harmless Sedentary Lifestyle May Equate to Liver Damage, Similar to Cigarette Smoking's Impact on Lung Health

Chronic liver disease often progresses subtly, yet the consequences can be grave if ignored. On this Liver Awareness Day, it's essential to acknowledge that extended daily sedentary hours may not just affect our spinal health; they might also be deteriorating our liver condition.

Harmless Sedentary Lifestyle May Equate to Liver Damage, Similar to Cigarette Smoking's Impact on Lung Health

In today's tech-centric world, a sedentary lifestyle has become the go-to, putting our health at risk. Whether it's long hours at the desk or weekend binge-watching sessions, prolonged inactivity is stealthily emerging as a significant health concern, not just for our heart and lungs, but also for our liver. While smoking has long been recognized as a serious health hazard, prolonged sitting is now being compared for its equally damaging long-term effects, including its impact on liver health.

According to the Indian Journal of Community Medicine, the prevalence of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is more than 25% worldwide and 9% to 32% in the general Indian population. This higher prevalence is usually associated with individuals who are overweight, obese, and diabetic.

To help you spot potential liver issues early, Dr. Niteen Kumar, HOD & Consultant - Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery at Manipal Hospital, Dwarka, New Delhi, shared some signs to watch out for:

  • Liver disease often shows no symptoms in the initial stages.
  • Fatigue
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Abdominal discomfort or bloating
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Dark-coloured urine and light-coloured stools

To beat the sedentary lifestyle and safeguard your liver, consider introducing these habits into your daily routine:

1. Move Every 30 Minutes: Avoid spending long hours sitting. Make a habit of standing, walking, or stretching every 30 minutes. This helps improve blood circulation, supports your metabolism, and aids in reducing fat accumulation in the liver, a key factor in preventing NAFLD.

Remember, the liver is central to energy metabolism. Liver dysfunction frequently leads to fatigue. Despite feeling exhausted, physical activity can help combat fatigue. It's also crucial to schedule rest periods in advance when a busy day is on the horizon.

2. Embrace a Balanced Diet: Opt for a liver-friendly diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean proteins such as fish, legumes, or poultry. Steer clear of saturated fats, fried foods, and processed sugars, which can lead to liver inflammation and fat buildup.

Additionally, consider reducing sugar and refined carbs, increasing omega-3s and antioxidants, choosing healthy fats, and including lean proteins and low-fat dairy in your diet. To learn more about dietary adjustments, consider these insights:

  • Reduce sugar and refined carbs: Cut out sugary drinks and processed foods high in added sugars or refined grains.
  • Increase omega-3s and antioxidants: Prioritize walnuts, avocado, sunflower seeds (rich in vitamin E), and green tea to reduce liver fat and inflammation.
  • Choose healthy fats: Replace saturated fats with olive oil, which lowers liver enzyme levels and promotes weight management.
  • Include lean proteins and low-fat dairy: Go for fish, poultry, and low-fat dairy products like milk, which protect liver cells.
  • Limit alcohol: Moderate consumption can worsen liver damage.

3. Stay Hydrated: Water is essential for flushing out toxins from your system. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily to support the liver's detoxification processes.

4. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Obesity and overweight often lead to liver conditions such as NAFLD and cirrhosis. By monitoring your weight through a combination of exercise and a balanced diet, you can prevent excess fat storage in the liver.

5. Manage Stress Levels: Chronic stress indirectly affects liver health by impacting the immune system and increasing inflammation. Listen to your favorite music or engage in relaxing activities such as mindfulness, meditation, yoga, or any hobby that brings you joy and calm.

6. Schedule Regular Health Check-ups: Routine liver function tests and screenings can detect liver issues early, guiding lifestyle adjustments.

7. Stop Alcohol and Avoid Unnecessary Medications: Alcohol is a major cause of liver damage. To protect your liver health, minimize alcohol consumption or avoid it entirely, especially if you're at risk. Additionally, steer clear of self-medication and overuse of painkillers or supplements, as these can burden the liver. In severe cases, lifestyle modifications might not be able to reverse liver damage. For cases of irreversible liver failure, advanced interventions such as medical management, dietary regimes, and in some cases, Liver Transplantation (LTP) may be required.
