Hospital Staff in Düsseldorf Train for Emergency Situations Under Authentic Scenarios Involving Injured Individuals
University Clinic Düsseldorf Conducts Mass Casualty Exercise
The University Clinic Düsseldorf (UKD), one of the most important medical centers in North Rhine-Westphalia, recently conducted a realistic mass casualty exercise known as the MASE (Massenanfall von Verletzten).
The exercise, which took place in the tallest building on the UKD campus, aimed to simulate a real-world disaster scenario. The exercise leaders were pleased with the performance of the participants, commending the good interaction among the team and their high willingness to engage with the artificially created stressful situation.
During the exercise, teams from the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Region Düsseldorf and the Jugendrotkreuz Düsseldorf participated, working alongside the UKD's medical staff, nursing staff, medical technologists, and administrative staff. In about two hours, they treated approximately 30 patients, providing an opportunity for the participants to strengthen their competencies in emergency situations.
The patients were simulated by actors who presented with various injuries, such as heavy bleeding, splinters, burns, and artery injuries. The exercise served as a learning opportunity for potential real-life scenarios, allowing the staff to practice the alarm process, set up supply capacities, and check the up-to-dateness and functionality of existing guidelines and checklists.
Despite the dramatic nature of the exercise, it is worth noting that the UKD was not affected by the screaming patient actors or the made-up injuries. The clinic, which employs 9,300 employees at the clinic and its subsidiaries, treats over 45,000 inpatients and 270,000 outpatients annually.
The UKD, consisting of 60 clinics and institutes, fosters intensive interdisciplinary cooperation. Known for its close integration of clinic and research for the safe application of new methods, the UKD is the largest hospital in Düsseldorf.
While specific details about the objectives, results, and roles of different staff members in the MASE exercise are not readily available in the public domain, it is generally understood that realistic mass casualty exercises in hospital settings typically aim to test and improve emergency response protocols, communication, triage, resource allocation, and coordination among various medical and support staff.
For detailed and specific information on such an exercise at the University Clinic Düsseldorf, including objectives, outcomes, and staff roles, it may be necessary to consult official reports or publications directly from the clinic or associated emergency management authorities.
- Participants from the Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Region Düsseldorf and the Jugendrotkreuz Düsseldorf, along with UKD's medical, nursing, and administrative staff, collaborated in the MASE exercise, applying their skills in health-and-wellness and medical-conditions during a simulated emergency.
