Disregarded Passenger in Vehicle - "I evaded the driver's attention"
You know Jan Ullrich, the legendary ex-Tour de France champion, right? Well, he's in the news again, but this time, it ain't for winning a race.
Last Friday was a fateful day for Jan, who's currently 51. While training in Merdingen, Baden-Württemberg, his ride took a turn for the worse. A driver, seemingly oblivious, decided to make a turn right in front of him, leaving Jan with a head-on collision on the left side. The former cycling phenom was estimated to be traveling around 25 to 30 km/h at the time of the crash.
"I was rollin', just wanted to do one more lap, let my legs loose," said Jan, reminiscing about that fatal day. "And then... BAM! A driver comes outta nowhere and smacks me good."
The Moment that Stopped Time
That accident was a doozy. Besides the crushing impact, Jan broke his kneecap, fractured several ribs, and collapsed a lung. Talk about a harsh reality check.
But here's the real kicker: just minutes after the crash, his girlfriend, Elizabeth, happened upon the scene. Ever heard the saying that you ain't ready for a heart attack 'til your wife has one? Well, it's kinda like that. Elizabeth was floored, man! She came just a few minutes too late to save him, but timed right, and she'da been in the thick of things. Jan and Elizabeth got together back in 2018 on sunny Mallorca.
Medical Woes and agonizing Pain
Docs said Jan's lung was touch-and-go at first, but now that the dust has settled, he's doing better. Still, the pain ain't gonna let up anytime soon. He's got this nagging injury in the knee, which required surgery on Monday, and his ribs are still taking their sweet time to heal.
Now, you might be wondering if his past struggles with drugs and addiction come into play with the painkillers and medication. Jan confirmed that his team is keeping an eye on it, but he's in good hands, man. They ain't gonna let another demon get the best of him.
Cycling Festival Despite the Setbacks
Despite this brutal crash, the "Jan Ullrich Cycling Festival" in Bad Dürrheim is still going down this weekend (17/18 May). Even Lance Armstrong, Ullrich's old rival, will drop by, though he won't be pedaling on a bike this time.
So, there ya have it—Jan Ullrich's life The Fast Lane just took a turn onto The Hard Knock Life. Here's hopin' he'll pull through with flying colors.
