Industrial Building FUTURE Designs earns The IMMUNE Building StandardTM recognition for its UK factory and head office
In a significant step towards enhancing the safety and resilience of physical spaces, FUTURE Designs, a leading UK-based company, has become the first industrial building in the world to receive the IMMUNE Building StandardTM certification. This groundbreaking certification was awarded by the Healthy by Design Building Institute (HDBI).
The IMMUNE Building Standard, an open-source global standard, is adaptable to any built environment, including industrial buildings. Developed to increase the resilience of physical spaces against health threats, it was inspired by technologies and procedures used in hospitals and medical clinics.
David Clements, Chief Executive at FUTURE Designs, expressed his gratitude towards the IMMUNE Building Standard for this important innovation. He stated that their commitment to making their workplace the safest possible for team members led to their successful implementation of the standard.
To achieve the 'IMMUNETM - Strong' label, FUTURE Designs spent hundreds of hours and great resources to ensure their premises were sanitized to the highest possible level to combat the Covid-19 strain of bacteria. They installed FUZONE500, their airborne and surface bacteria removal system, in all areas of their facility.
Recommended measures for implementation in buildings include efficient air filtering systems and surface sanitization technologies. FUTURE Designs also implemented an Emergency IMMUNETM Warehouse for rapid logistic response in pandemic situations and an IMMUNETM Quarantine Room as a dedicated area for immediate isolation in case of risk.
The IMMUNE Building Standard is based on an IMMUNETM Assessment Scoring Index with over 120 measures. The certification process was conducted by Build Green, an independent authorised building assessor. As a result of these measures, FUTURE Designs' factory and headquarters have recorded zero Covid cases to date.
The IMMUNE Building Standard expansion includes real estate sectors impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, beyond office buildings. This move signifies a significant step towards ensuring the safety and resilience of various physical spaces against health threats.
In 2025, the first IMMUNE™ certification for an industrial building worldwide was awarded by the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF), a sustainability initiative of University College London. While the exact institution that received this certification is not explicitly stated, it is known that laboratories worldwide receive certification through LEAF based on their sustainability practices.
This achievement by FUTURE Designs underscores the potential of the IMMUNE Building Standard in enhancing the safety and resilience of industrial buildings against health threats, paving the way for a safer and healthier future.
