jointannouncement by the Prosecutor's Office of Braunschweig, the Wolfenbüttel Police Department, and the City of Wolfenbüttel
On a fateful Monday, September 1, 2025, a 1.5-year-old toddler came into contact with narcotics at the Geibelstraße/Ackerstraße playground in Wolfenbüttel. The incident occurred between 15:00 and 19:00, and the child's mother was present during the incident with two toddlers.
During their stay, the child behaved unusually, showing signs of apathy, loss of appetite, and a strong fixation on a toy. Around 17:00, the child's father arrived at the playground. The affected playground area was immediately closed and searched by the police and the city of Wolfenbüttel, including with drug-sniffing dogs.
The subsequent car ride proved distressing as the child vomited, expelling a "plastic-like" material. Upon arrival at the Clinic of Braunschweig, symptoms suggested intoxication. A urine test showed positive results for cocaine, amphetamines, MDMA, and ecstasy. Further blood tests to confirm and quantify the substances are pending. The child remains in the pediatric intensive care unit, but is not in life-threatening condition.
The city administration of Wolfenbüttel and the police are urging parents and guardians to supervise their children carefully during playground visits. It is strongly recommended to prevent children from taking unknown objects or putting them in their mouths. Suspicious observations or objects should be reported immediately to the relevant authorities.

The playground reopened on September 4, 2025, at 15:00, following a thorough investigation and cleaning. This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and caution in our daily lives, particularly when our children are involved.
