List of ACIP Committee Members Revealed
The White House is hosting a press conference led by the White House COVID-19 Response Team to provide updates on the progress of Operation Warp Speed and the ongoing response to the global pandemic.
The team, consisting of Dr. Anthony Fauci, Dr. Deborah Birx, and General Gustave Perna, is spearheading the efforts to accelerate the development, manufacturing, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. General Perna serves as the chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed.
It's important to clarify that the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) is not a part of the White House COVID-19 Response Team. ACIP, an independent body responsible for making vaccine recommendations, consists of up to 19 voting members, including medical and public health experts. These members do not work for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
ACIP's role is separate from the chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed. The committee does not lead or manage Operation Warp Speed. Instead, it provides recommendations on vaccines. ACIP's 30 representatives of liaison organizations with related immunization expertise contribute to these recommendations.
Recently, the ACIP has undergone a restructuring, with the appointment of five new members. These include Dr. Kirk Milhoan, a pediatric cardiologist, and Dr. Catherine Stein, an epidemiologist—both known for their concerns about mRNA vaccine safety. This restructuring aims to restore vaccine confidence but has sparked controversy due to the new members' critical views on established vaccination practices.
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices also includes six ex officio members representing federal agencies with immunization programs in the United States.
Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator, is also a key figure in the COVID-19 response efforts. The press conference is being held to discuss these efforts and the progress made so far.
Operation Warp Speed is a public-private partnership aimed at accelerating the development, manufacturing, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines. The event in question is a press conference focused on the topic of the COVID-19 response.
