Local Authority of Bissendorf initiates operation of drinking water wells
In the heart of Bissendorf, a series of innovative drinking water fountains are set to revolutionize the town's public spaces. The first fountain was inaugurated on August 5, 2024, outside the town hall, with more to follow in the coming months.
Mayor Guido Halfter expressed his delight about the new addition, stating, "The option to fill water bottles easily and for free is a wonderful development for our town. Residents and visitors will now have convenient access to fresh drinking water."
The water dispensers, which will be set up both indoors and outdoors where technically feasible and reasonable, operate with a simple push of a button, providing half a liter of fresh drinking water. The chosen model follows strict hygiene standards, with regular testing by an external laboratory ensuring bacterial contamination is practically ruled out.
To maintain hygiene, the system cleans itself every three hours, preventing bacteria from multiplying in the warming water. The municipality of Bissendorf is adhering to the EU drinking water directive and the "Water Resources Act," specifically section 50 on public water supply.
In the colder months, the fountains will be dismantled and reassembled in the spring. The third drinking water fountain will be installed together with the new bike station at the Wissingen train station.
An identical model has already been installed in the Kurgarten Schledehausen and is set to open in the coming days. Interestingly, a model allowing direct drinking from the fountain was rejected for hygiene reasons.
The locations of the water fountains will be added to popular navigation and sports apps, making them easily accessible for all. The system ensures a constant water supply, even on hot days, as confirmed by Ingo Nagel.
The municipality's actions align with the requirement to provide drinking water at public places through indoor and outdoor facilities. The approximate cost for each water tap is 5,000 euros. The installation of water fountains is subject to technical feasibility and reasonableness, considering demand, local climate, and geography.
