Managing Menopause: Hot Flash Treatments and Remedies

Hot flashes, a common symptom of menopause, affect up to 75% of women in the US. They are characterised by sudden warmth, sweating, and other discomforts. Various treatments and management strategies exist, ranging from medications to lifestyle changes and natural remedies.

Hot flashes, often accompanied by symptoms like racing heartbeat, headache, and fatigue, can be managed in several ways. Nonhormonal medications such as fezolinetant (Veozah) and paroxetine (Brisdelle) have shown promise. Lifestyle adjustments like avoiding triggers, maintaining healthy habits, and improving sleep environments can also help limit hot flashes.

Natural remedies have been explored, with mixed results. A 2023 meta-analysis found black cohosh extracts may reduce hot flashes, but rare liver damage cases have been reported. Similarly, a 2022 meta-analysis suggested vitamin E with omega-3 supplements might help, but further research is needed.

Hot flashes, a significant aspect of menopause for many women, can be managed through various methods. While hormone replacement therapy is effective, it carries risks. Nonhormonal medications, lifestyle changes, and natural remedies offer alternative options, with ongoing research providing insights into their effectiveness.
