In a significant stride towards women's economic empowerment, the "Lakhpati Didi" initiative, launched under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM), is making a substantial impact. The goal of this initiative is to economically empower rural women Self-Help Group (SHG) members by enabling them to generate a sustainable income of at least ₹1 lakh per annum.

As of mid-2025, over 1.48 crore rural women SHG members across India have been empowered to become Lakhpati Didis, meaning they earn a minimum income of ₹1 lakh per annum sustainably for at least four agricultural seasons or business cycles. In states like Odisha and Haryana, the initiative has been particularly successful, with more than 7.80 lakh SHG women empowered in Odisha and over 1.06 lakh women benefiting in Haryana. Efforts are underway to enable an additional 25,000 women in Haryana in the current financial year.

The Lakhpati Didi initiative fosters social and financial inclusion through capacity building in entrepreneurship and employment. It encourages self-employment and wage employment, contributing to the financial independence of rural women. The initiative is not a stand-alone scheme but an initiative under DAY-NRLM, which has mobilized 10.05 crore rural households into nearly 91 lakh SHGs nationwide.

Union Agriculture Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, is proud of the government's Lakhpati Didi initiative under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He has pledged to buy only products made in India for his daily life and has appealed for others to do the same, including buying goods from SHGs, local markets, and national manufacturers.

In a show of support, Chouhan celebrated Raksha Bandhan with members of women's self-help groups in Vidisha and encouraged his family, neighbors, and villagers to do the same. He also took out a Tiranga Yatra and Swadeshi March in Vidisha, Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, blending messages of nationalism, women's empowerment, and support for domestic industries.

The target of the Lakhpati Didi initiative is to economically empower 3 crore women to earn ₹1 lakh annually, and Chouhan is optimistic that this target will be met ahead of time. The ongoing expansion and state-level promotion of the Lakhpati Didi initiative across India indicate a promising future for rural women's income generation.
