Medical device innovations get a significant boost as MAHE and BPL Medical Technologies announce a strategic alliance.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) and BPL Medical Technologies Private Limited have sealed a significant MoU to forge a strategic alliance, foster medical device innovation, and bridge the industry-academia divide. The partnership, signe under MAHE's "Year of Excellence in Industry-Academia Collaboration" initiative, aims to combine academic research with industry expertise to develop cost-effective, clinically validated medical devices for both the Indian and global markets.
The collaboration involves joint research and development initiatives, technology transfer, and the potential establishment of Centres of Excellence to enhance research and development capabilities in the field of medical devices. The partnership shall provide students with real-world exposure while driving economic growth through contributions to India's projected $50 billion medical devices market by 2030, facilitating MedTech exports.
The MoU was formalized by Dr Giridhar P Kini, Registrar of MAHE, and Mr Guruswamy Krishnamurthy, CEO of BPL Medical Technologies in the presence of key figures from both institutions. A highlight of MAHE's "Year of Excellence in Industry-Academia Collaboration" initiative, the event underscored the university's commitment to fostering collaboration between academia and industry.
In addition, during the ceremony, Dr Arun Maiya, Dean of Manipal College of Health Professions, Manipal, presented MAHE's Medical Instruments, Devices & Allied Services (MIDAS) hub, supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. MIDAS, India's first medical device innovation hub within a private higher education ecosystem, unites 25 institutions and 30 industry partners to drive indigenous design, development, and commercialization of innovative healthcare devices, reducing reliance on imports. It offers specialized training and workshops, promoting a vibrant medical technology innovation ecosystem that offers accessible, high-quality healthcare solutions across India.
