New coronavirus cases rose by 20,407, according to RKI data; infection rate drops to 105.7 per 100,000 people.
Germany's COVID-19 Incidence Rate Decreases, Active Case Numbers Estimated
The seven-day COVID-19 incidence rate in Germany has seen a recent decrease, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) data. The rate dropped from 110.1 to 105.7 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
On Thursday morning, the RKI reported 20,407 new COVID-19 infections, a decrease of 3,893 cases compared to the previous Thursday. This brings the total number of people in Germany who have tested positive for the coronavirus to 2,93 million.
However, the current seven-day incidence rate is not provided in the latest RKI report. The RKI's surveillance approach since late 2021 has emphasized monitoring the hospitalization incidence rate, ICU occupancy, and vaccination coverage, rather than just case incidence.
Regarding the current active case estimates, the available data does not provide specific numerical figures for active COVID-19 cases in Germany as of late August 2025. The RKI's focus has shifted towards indicators of severe disease and healthcare load, such as hospitalizations and ICU occupancy.
Based on provisional figures, the RKI currently estimates around 221,700 active COVID-19 cases in Germany. It is important to note that these figures may be adjusted by the RKI later.
In addition, the RKI reported 306 deaths within 24 hours in connection with the virus, increasing the total number of deaths within 24 hours to 77,707. Follow-up reports are expected for the coming days.
Some health authorities may have worked reduced hours over Easter, and fewer tests may have been conducted over the holidays, which could potentially impact the reported numbers. Nonetheless, the trend of decreasing incidence rates and ongoing public health measures continues to be monitored closely by health authorities in Germany.
