New Guide Aims to Protect Older Victims of Tech-Facilitated Domestic Abuse

A new guide has been launched to combat a growing issue: domestic abusers exploiting technology to target older people. Developed by SafeLives, the guide aims to empower and protect older victims, with support from Aberystwyth University, Dyfed-Powys Police, and Parental Education Growth Support (PEGS).

One in three women have experienced online abuse, and older adults are not exempt. Between May 2024 and April 2025, over 950 domestic abuse-related crimes involving older victims were reported in Dyfed-Powys Police's jurisdiction, with 10% linked to technology. The guide uses real-life cases to illustrate the problem. One involved a woman stalked and harassed using a fake Facebook profile, mobile tracking app, and Ring doorbell camera. Another case saw a terminally ill man's son spend £20,000 of his money without permission through smartphones and online accounts. The guide provides practical advice, such as securing bank accounts and locking smart devices, to prevent such abuse.

Research by PEGS found that 14% of older parents they supported had experienced digital abuse from children or grandchildren. The guide is a result of collaboration between Aberystwyth University's Dewis Choice initiative, which supports older victims of domestic abuse, and Dyfed-Powys Police.

The guide is a crucial step in tackling technology-facilitated domestic abuse against older people. It equips victims and professionals with the knowledge to recognise, prevent, and respond to such abuse. By raising awareness and providing practical advice, the guide seeks to create a safer digital environment for older adults.
