Newborn baby discovered to have traces of cocaine in its system at birth, according to authorities, who also reported the tragic fatality of the child's sibling caused by an alligator, the child's mother.
In a shocking turn of events, Hilda Vasquez, a resident of New Orleans, has been arrested on counts of negligent homicide and second-degree cruelty to juveniles, following the tragic death of her 12-year-old son, Bryan Vasquez.
Last month, Bryan's lifeless body was found in a lagoon in New Orleans East. The Orleans Parish Coroner's office later determined that Bryan had suffered a traumatic attack and drowned, most likely at the hands of an alligator.
The tragedy is not an isolated incident in Hilda Vasquez's history. Court records reveal that Vasquez was previously convicted of cruelty to juveniles in 2014. Furthermore, two past Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) cases were open against Vasquez in connection with alleged child abuse and lack of supervision.
Vasquez's newborn son also tested positive for cocaine in July, prompting the youth welfare office (Jugendamt) to place the infant under surveillance. The DCFS case for her newborn having cocaine in its system remains open.
In a troubling development, court documents revealed on Monday that both Hilda Vasquez and her newborn tested positive for cocaine in July. This alarming revelation has further fuelled concerns about her ability to care for her children.
In light of these allegations, a judge has ordered Vasquez to be held without bond. The DCFS case for Bryan's death remains open, and two additional cases remain open: one for Bryan's death and the other for her newborn having cocaine in its system.
Prosecutors argue that Vasquez poses a danger to the community, and it appears that the justice system agrees. As the investigation continues, the community awaits answers and justice for Bryan Vasquez.
