Wandering Medicine Nobel Laureate Discovers Award Late - Nobel Prize in Medicine Awarded to Trio Despite Initial Missed Calls
Three scientists, including David A. Ramsdell, have been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The announcement, made on October 6, recognised their pioneering work on peripheral immune tolerance. Ramsdell, however, initially missed the news due to poor phone signal in Montana.
Ramsdell, a wandering medicine Nobel laureate, was in Montana when the Nobel Committee attempted to reach him. Due to poor signal, he missed the call and only learned of his award much later. In a similar incident, Mary E. Brunkow, another recipient, initially dismissed the Nobel Committee's call as a spam call due to an unknown Swedish number and went back to sleep. The trio, along with Fred Ramsdell, received the prestigious award for their groundbreaking discoveries in the field of immune system function. Ramsdell tried to contact the Nobel Assembly's secretary general, Thomas Perlmann, but it was late evening in Sweden and no one was available.
The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to David A. Ramsdell, Mary E. Brunkow, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their significant contributions to understanding peripheral immune tolerance. Despite initial communication challenges, the laureates' achievements have been recognised and celebrated.
