oct.18: Sheridan and SMH launch Pink Campaign
The Sheridan Memorial Hospital Foundation is gearing up for the annual community fundraiser, The Link - Partners in Pink Run/Walk, which is set to take place on October 18, 2020. This significant event aims to raise funds for the Welch Cancer Center, a crucial part of cancer care and healing in Sheridan County.
October 18 also marks National Mammography Day, emphasising the importance of regular screenings in the early detection of breast cancer. The Link - Partners in Pink Run/Walk supports this mission, as many breast cancers are detected during routine mammograms before symptoms appear.
The Link - Partners in Pink Run/Walk honours patients, survivors, and families in the community. Funds raised through the event will support the Welch Cancer Center's services, equipment, and patient comfort programs.
According to the American Cancer Society, women with an average risk should start annual mammograms between ages 40 and 45 and continue until age 54. After age 54, women may switch to every two years or continue yearly screenings. It's essential to note that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force suggests screening every two years between ages 40 and 74.
Keshia Strauch, a Mammography Technologist at Sheridan Memorial Hospital, plays a vital role in ensuring the accurate and comfortable screening of patients. Her expertise contributes significantly to the early detection of breast cancer.
Sadly, breast cancer remains a significant health concern, with around 42,000 women and 500 men dying from the disease each year in the United States. However, the number of diagnoses is also high, with approximately 240,000 women and 2,100 men being diagnosed annually.
The Link - Partners in Pink Run/Walk is a vital community fundraiser, serving as a testament to the community's commitment to supporting those affected by cancer. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month is recognised nationally in October, The Link - Partners in Pink Run/Walk serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing fight against breast cancer and the importance of early detection and care.
More information about The Link - Partners in Pink Run/Walk will be shared in future stories. Stay tuned for updates and ways you can get involved in this vital community event.
