Orangutan Ejde, After 3 Decades at Rostock Zoo, Is No More

Ape Ejde Passes After Longtime Residence at Rostock Zoo: Orangutan's Demise - Orangutan Ejde, a resident of Rostock Zoo for over three decades, has passed away.

Saying farewell to an old friend, Rostock Zoo announced the passing of their 44-year-old male orangutan, Ejde. Since his chronic respiratory condition had significantly worsened, Ejde found some peace on Saturday after years of struggle.

Hailing from Borneo, Ejde was born in a Danish zoo in July 1980 and was nine when he moved to Vienna's Schönbrunn Zoo. Eventually, Ejde was part of the European Breeding Programme, making his way to Rostock in 1993. With heavy heart, Zoo Director Antje Angeli declared Ejde's death a significant loss, given his lengthy service as an ambassador for the critically endangered orangutan species.

While orangutans in the wild typically live up to 35 to 40 years, those in human care often outlast their wild counterparts. The eldest known female orangutan born in 1962 is a shining example of this fact.

Among Ejde's kin in Rostock Zoo, his daughter Mayang (born 2018), and sons Bayu (2020) and Sabas (2003) remain. The present circumstance of these offspring post Ejde's demise isn't disclosed in the available sources. For clarification, reach out to Rostock Zoo or check their official updates.
