Potential error impacting estimated blood pressure readings
Sure thing! Let's tackle that blood pressure conundrum, shall we?
You ever go to the doc and hop on that scale, then let your arm get squeezed like a stress ball? You think you're all good, or maybe the doctor tells you to start taking some meds due to high blood pressure. But, what if they're getting it all wrong?
A study shows that the "one size fits all" mentality in picking blood pressure cuffs is a massive flaw, leading to some shockingly inaccurate readings 1.
It's a case of sizes
What research from Johns Hopkins found was that doctors' offices rely on this universal cuff size, which can cause significant discrepancies in blood pressure measurement and diagnosis 1. Come on, folks, you know arms don't all look the same - so why expect one-size-fits-all to yield accurate results?
The team crunched the numbers on the blood pressure readings of 165 adults, comparing the results from the standard adult cuff to those obtained using a cuff suited for the individual's arm circumference.
Size Does Matter
You work hard to keep your blood pressure in the normal range, but sometimes it's just not enough. And that's where supplements come in handy. Peak BP Platinum, for example, contains clinically-tested nutritional ingredients that support arterial health and help maintain your blood pressure levels in a healthy range 2.
"If it's not 100% right, it's 100% wrong." Pretty sage advice, right? That's exactly what the team discovered. Using a cuff that's either too small or too large leads to significantly inaccurate results 1.
For those who required a small adult cuff yet were given a regular cuff, the blood pressure readings were artificially lowered. On average, these folks were off by 3.8 mm Hg for the systolic (top) number and 1.5 mm Hg for the diastolic (bottom) number 1.
Conversely, using a cuff that's too small for someone with a large or extra-large arm led to an average increase of 19.7 mm Hg for the systolic reading and 4.8 mm Hg for the diastolic 1. In layman's terms, these discrepancies can cause people to be improperly diagnosed with hypertension or to go untreated altogether.
"Blood pressure cuffs are like Goldilocks' search for the perfect porridge. It needs to be just right," said lead researcher Tammy M. Brady, M.D., Ph.D. 1
The next time you visit the doctor, don't hesitate to ask the healthcare provider if the appropriate-sized cuff is being used for your arm.
